I played a Sylvari Ranger, I know I wanna play Elementalist/Ranger/Mesmer, but have only had the chance to try Ranger.
First impresstions of the game was good, the graphics are really good altho with my GTX580 I only reach 45-55 FPS on everthing on MAX (anyone got a spare GTX680?)
There are some things here and there that keept bugging me in the gameplay, but it just takes time to get used to I guess.
And I will most likley go for a Ranger but I don't know if I am going Sylvari or Nord yet.

I don't know what the hell am I going to be, Ranger was my first choice, but gameplay started to be boring after a while, than Warrior was 2nd, and last beta I played Guardian, he is great but it doesn't kite so well if going gets tough. ???
Since Santo is goanna be Warrior and you Ranger, I might stick with Guardian, so we have different classes for combo fields, but some alts will grow in time for sure cos lots of classes are very likeable! :)
I must say that I changed my opinion what I will play after trying each proffesion, every damn proffesion has some kind of "addiction" factor ;D.
I defenetly wanted to play range class and I was only looking at them.
I was sure I will play necro at the start, then after trying ranger I defenetly decided he will be my proffesion. Just to see the other classes I decided to give them an hour or 2. After trying everything but engineer and warrior, ranger was still pretty high on my play list, but I found the elementalist very interesting also (most complex proffesion to play, but very fun).
After all that I was pretty sure I had my class, cos engineer didn't look so interesting and warrior was defenetly on the bottom of my wish to play list, oh how very wrong was I. I decided to try the engineer, and it was love at first sight ;D. I played him the most of betas and I was 99% sure this is my proffesion, until last day of the last beta I tried the WARRIOR.
I wanted to play (and still want to play) range class, and you wouldn't belive it but warrior is my range class I will play 8). When I got rifle in the warriors hands and had sooo much fun I just couldn't belive it. My damage was basicly the same of every other range class and you can put traits for rifles and bows, so there are even stronger then the original. I solo killed event boss only by rifle, that I couldn't do with any other range class ;).
That is the beauty of this game - there are no restrictions. People who didn't try the game will think "sure you can use rifle and bow, but as "melee" class you can't beat a range class or the other way around", but this doesn't apply for this game. Basicly you need to use both melee and range weapons for all the classes, but you can still prefer melee or range type of combat and play it like that. This game offers you the way to play any class, any way you want it and it rocks!
My proffesion is : Warrior, main weapon: Rifle ;)
Fred too bad you didn't have time to try the game a bit more, it gets really really interesting. For me personally slyvari have the most boring starting area.

Haveing no mobile and internet signals is actually very good for you, at least you will be safe form any remote controlled IED! :P
I must say, after seeing some gameplay movies of this game it actually looks like a verry nice game. And i think i will buy it. I just hope there's gonna be an open beta event so i can check if its for me.
As for proffesion, it looks like it going to be a ranger longbow/greatsword combo. And probably a sylvari. Plant people ftw. A thief with a shortbow seems promissing aswell :)

Why? when was there an open beta test? I did recieve an e-mail, however that stated that i should have pre ordered or something..
There was 3 beta weekends and few stress tests for ppl who pre-purchased, there was never any open beta and it's all over now, game comes out in 20 days or so and if you have pre-purchased, you have 3 day head start form 25.08., that's it.
So its summer and i work in IT at uni/college equivelant here in the great flatlands, meaning its holiday season and there are 200 people logged in. Instead of the usual 20k. So i saw alot of GW2 movies the past couple of days, and hot damn i'm psyched. Its really weird that i am getting so excited about another mmo. But the whole dynamic concept and the worldvsworldvsworld brings me back to the days of dark age of camelot. I think i will definitly buy this game, and since there is a lack of a monk type class (i played a friar in daoc, hunter+druid in wow) the ranger is what appeals to me the most. Espcially the longbow. I've got like a bow fetish in games, and also big huge ass swords aswell. And the attuned to nature thing is what i like aswell. For race its probably going to be a Sylvari. However Human/Norn is also an option. The charr do not appeal to me at all. And the Asura, well, i see them more as magic users rather then rangers.
Other option would have be a warrior with the same weapons. I just havent seen the yogscast for the warrior.
My blood is boiling so to speak, do you guys know wich server you are going to start on?

Yeah, it looks like this stress test they were testing log in servers.
We are on riverside cos at the start it was english server, they changed it last beta, but we didn't see the point in changing servers for only stress tests.
Something that came to my attention just now and if true, really sucks..

As in every mmo you have to pay for server transfer. In Gw2 payment for server transfer are gems.
Don't worry Fred, for the actual game everything is reset, including servers. All this was just for beta. At the start of the game you get complete clean slate and you are able to chose your server.

After about an hour of trying to get in i finally mananged to create a character wich will take AGES to perfect in retail damnit! Its just a shame that the Sylvari dream boss was bugged and the event wouldnt start, so i created a norn. I found that the movement animation for the norn was really slow (it was a female). It felt like she was walking instead of running. And i hope there are going to be more hair options for the sylvari male, i'd really like to play a male ranger, but so far i like the females better.
its just a shame that you start with an axe.. i'd rather start with my bow :p

Also tried a bit of the thief, human female, smallest physique. But the damn mask/hood is soooooo big it looked goofy :)
Its weird i so want to play a ranger, but mesmer, here's to hoping i get to test that :) Still, i'm kind of dissappointed with the sylvari male face/hair options. Norn seems to be a good 2nd. And i think Arena is smart to let the 3 days head start begin on a saturday, esp saturday morning 9am CEST ^^ I think i'm gonna have a lot of fun with this game and the WvWvW will bring back DAoC memories :)

I dont like the casting animations, class is fun, animations are not :p So gonna try a female, or asura :) I actually want a male character for a main, buf if not a female will have to do :) Still hanging toward ranger though. I think you can make on another server and transfer there for free. First migration is for free as far I heard. Or not??

you can create a character on another server and then migrate you characters to their new home on Gandara, this is free for the first week of the game or so, soooo, take advantage of it.
Anyways, my ranger is lvl 30 at the moment and i feel its lacking something. The Longbow isnt that powerfull when all skills are on CD, the auto attack is way to slow and at max range does about the same damage as the auto attack from the short bow. A melee weapon is also not an option since rangers tend to be verry squishy, everytime i tried to melee i mostly got instagibbed. I dont know if this is done because of the pet, but its certainly not funny. Despite all that i am thoroughly enjoying my adventure through Tyria. There is always something to do, you always get rewarderd for the things you do (i scored ProTrolls 100 influence points allready!). So yesterday i basicly completed the brisban wildlands and i thought: lets do my personal story now, maybe they want me to go somewhere after. But it was late and i still havent completed that lol :)
And ofcourse, the first world problems. On your mini map you see a tree that can be cut down. You were moving someplace else, but what the hell. When you get to the tree, 2 more trees pop up and a plant and an ore vein, so you get those aswell. 30 mins and a couple of dynamic events later. Where was i going again? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. :)
My G******n (don't let Moo see this :P ) is lv 30 too so it is time for Ascalonian Catacombs (first lv 30 dungeon)!! /drums

Anyways, yesterday was one of the best days in an mmo i ever had. I was grouping with a friend. He rerolled his thief into a guardian. So he was lvl 14, i was lvl 30. And we had a blast going through the charr zone. Sure it went smooth but it was still a challenge. This is one of the major features of this game imho. The dynamic level range and just running around with a buddy and do stuff independent of wich level you are.
Also, GUARDIAN IS OP! he was using a Greatsword and a Hammer. Normal mobs died with 2 hits of the great sword. The third sequance attack almost never went off. I smell a nerf, cause this is really really strong. On the other hand, guardian is probably the coolest class to play and i am torn between warrior/guardian for my first alt.
Also, i found my first rare dye yesterday and it was Black. I am so happy!, i wanted that color so bad. A friend of mine who played GW1 said that black dye was the most expensive item in the game back then, so i'm glad i found it :)

they arent meant to be sold, but some can become quite expensive on the auction house because everyone wants them and they be quite rare :)

Also tried a warrior yesterday and it felt really underpowered. I was bashing away with a hammer and dual wielding and shooting the rifle. But it doesnt seem to have any power anymore. In the stress test the rifle was really strong, but now i am just shooting stuff and it just wont die. Maybe thats because of the creatures in the norn area having more hp then others, but still. So far the greatsword seems to be the way to go with a warrior with longbow as a second weapon for aoe and burn damage.
I'm probably also going to reroll my human thief into an asura thief and my asura mesmer into a human mesmer, I dont like the cast animations from the asura in combination with the mesmer spells. And since a mesmer needs to be female imho and my human thief is female and i dont want to play the same race/sex twice. By now you get the point :)
Today its going to be daily achievement time for my ranger and then trying more stuff with the warrior with greatsword/longbow. And try to finish the start zone.
Mesmers should definitely be human female, my human female Mesmer is so hot when she makes an illusion you think you are in twins heaven! :P

So the problem I have is that I'm firewalled to enter the game via this internet connection. I managed to download normally everything, but when I try to log in it says "You are behind a firewall". I'm connecting via company satelite link. We also have youtube, facebook and similar things blocked, but those I can enter through other secure internet sites, is that possible for this also??
When a lot of people are logging in at the same time, we europeans get the message that we are behind a firewall, when we actually arent. So i'd say try again. It usually takes 10-15 times to login at those times :(
That is not my problem. I have a problem with the company firewall settings. I just don't understand how I could download the game normally through that launcher, but it doesn't allow me entrance now.
Anyone else can help?
Well, i dont know if you operate the firewall or manage it? But you could place some port forwards in the firewall from the outgoing ip to your personal computers ip (you have to set an ip for your pc and not let DHCP handle it). Then it maybe possible to connect through it. Otherwise you could let your pc connect to a proxy server, so your companies isp isnt the isp you connect to the game anymore. However you need to have a good proxy for that and preferably one thats close to you, because this is usually extremely laggy.
In other news, damn mesmer is a fun class. it really learns you to switch weapons. I currently use scepter/focus + GS, the final PvE build will probably be scepter/focus+staff. But for now the staff does way more dmg @ lvl 13. For sPVP a sword/pistol +scepter/focus build seems to shine the most. 2 blocks, blur, weakness, disable from the pistol 5 skill, 2 strong phantasms, really nice. For PvE i'm going for a phantasm build with iWarlock and iWarden.
My Ranger is lvl 43 now, took me 3 hours! to get the daily yesterday there werent any events on my own server. I'm staying in the overflow next time :) Also i'm full of softwood, soooooo i need to level my huntsman to level 150, however i do not have a lot of materials for the tier 2 discoveries, 8 per item is way to ridiculous. Does anyone know a place to farm those blue tier 2 mats? I know centaurs seem to drop a lot of those item sacks wich give tons of mats, but it isnt nearly enough.
I also found my first yellow items, a pair of pirate pants from a champion mob, then a dagger from a normal centaur (2 kills after we downed a champion centaur). The champion dropped nothing, it was like the game said: "oh sorry we forgot your loot 2 mobs ago, here is a yellow). And also a yellow level 38 hammer with power, precision and a major sigil of power (7 power per kill, max stack 25, so 175 power!).
So far i enjoy my new skirmishing build with both the Sbow and the Lbow. And ground target traps, extra bleed chance on crit and ofcourse fury and swiftness on weapon swap. But esp the gt traps are a blast, though i dont know wich to use yet, the fire one is obvious due to high damage and low CD. The poison one seems not that strong. The frost trap doesnt do damage and the spike trap gives even more bleed. Ah well, it looks like fun :)

That brings us to our next topic, the Trading post. Today the trading post has come online and everyone that had horded their mats are putting it all on at once. Hold on to your salvaging kits and just sell all that gear you find. Salavaging 1 item for 2 iron ore or selling it for 1s and buy 20 iron ore from the trading post. I know what i'd do!
After the break we will talk about the overflow being a good thing.
Yes! the break is a few presses of the enter key. The overflow, lets see, with people spreading across the world, and events becomming more scarse, why not relog be put in an overflow and complete your event counter for the daily quickly? I know i would, that way i can play my alt some more.

Enjoying my Mesmer aswell. I'm using staff atm with a heavy +condition build. And scepter/torch.
This is giving me a crazy amount of survivability and dps with all the boons, conditions, shatters, shields, kiting, invis and burn (torch) and alot of illusion utility with scepter.
Maybe the dps is not as great as some other proffesions in terms of burst (other then shattering) but the consistant high dps and survivability/mobility/kiting is aswome.
What utility skills are you using with your mesmer moomore? And why the torch over the focus? the phantasmal warden does sooooooooo much dmg and he soaks projectiles aswell :)
I played some mesmer again yesterday, but like, i DIE, ALOT! its so squishy. Level 15 now, created toughness staff, scepter and focus (no power/condition version for lvl 15). And switched to illusion trait line. Time to test it out tonight.
Oh and yesterdays i finally got my: 100k without dying. 5min server goes down without warning. Roll back, and stuck at 97k/100k :s it just doesnt add up eventhough i earned more then 10k afterwards :(
I'm using sigil of domination for the +condition damage and the on-use stun, mirror images for when I need a big shatter, bigger heal (the more illusion the more your heal does), each illusion also gives me +3% dmg, -3% dmg taken. And I use blink to get out of nasty situations and to easily kite stuff.
I use the torch because im condition build. The 4 skill (The prestige) is awsome. It blinds your foe, makes you invis, and does a crap load of burn damage when you pop back out of stealth (especially with +condition) and the 5 skill phantasmal mage confuses enemies (again enhanced bij condition) and more important gives retaliation me and allies.
The torch gives you more control imo. Mesmer is build to control stuff and not to lazerpewpewstuff. its not as fast as other proffesions in pve though thats a fact.
In the start mesmers are a bit squishy. Thing is they are not build to be taking alot of damage. They are ment to kite stuff and make sure you dont get hit at all. i can pull 4+ mobs at a time with no problems kiting them around.
You just have to find your way around with them.
For example when using phase retreat while standing in chaos storm you get the combo which is a free chaos armor. Inside the storm you get buffed alot, mobs devuffed like crazy, especially with also the chaos armor active. You can pretty fast kill stuff that way. And if things get to hot, blink out and kite, or use the torch skill to get out, burn and then kite. I'm loving it. Tried some pvp a while ago and mesmer is really though to kill, and i bet annoying as fuck for the enemies.

Well the focus gives you the speed buff, but when you press it again you pull the enemies towards it and interupt them during that time. If you summon the iWarden at that moment he hits all enemies for insane damage.
But for now what i found did the most damage is Confusion. It took me 30 levels or so to see a 150hit on a mob with my ranger (ranger is more a attack fast for lower numbers proffesion). With the mesmer it took me 2 levels. 5 stacks of confusion, target uses skill, 150 dmg to him. So a phantasm that can keep the confusion stack high after the scepter 3 skill is also verry nice (and it increases with +condition damage) aswell. And the free chaos armor, been using that all the time :)
Question though, why choose 3/6/9% damage for active illusions over 33% increased confusion duration? longer duration means more damage :) But thats probably because i am level 15 and the mob doing an extra skill for high damage equals more damage then the 9% from my own skills at this time.
I agree with you on the prestige part, i didnt know it blinded foes aswell wich makes it even better. ah well, time to check it out some more. Its a fun alt and completely different from a "weapon" using proffesion like the ranger/warrior and basicly evrthing but the elementist and necro :)
